How Do You Determine What Size Furnace You Need? A 4 Step Guide

By Everett Maclachlan

The heating efficiency and capacity of furnaces are calculated as per the BTU. For different furnaces, the same BTU input would result in a different output depending upon the efficiency. Given this, it becomes highly important that the size be given enough consideration. Finding out what size one should have for their home is important. A furnace, which is small, may not be the ideal solution for a larger home.

One should not forget that smaller furnaces would not heat the house as effectively as a larger version. Furthermore, a smaller one also runs on a short-cycle, which would mean that the furnace would consume unnecessary energy without offering the same result.

This simultaneous on and off mechanism in the short-cycled furnaces would eventually bring forth a heavier cost constraint. Although, furnaces are not 100% accurate, choosing the right size of a furnace helps you to lower your utility bills.

Following is a simple four-step guide that will help in deciding on what size would be apt for a home.

1) As mentioned before, the heating capacity of a furnace is calculated with the BTU or the British Thermal Units. This parameter is highly effective in deciding on what size furnace one should get for their homes. By determining the energy output of a furnace through the BTU, one will be able to measure the amount of heating that the furnace is able to generate. The thumb rule for selecting a furnace size as per the BTU points is to check whether the furnace is able to produce 30-35 BTUs for a square foot. Although, this output may vary as per the climate and the insulation of the home, however, comparing the BTU is often the best means to determine a furnace size.

2) It is important to understand how to calculate the BTU output for a furnace. Usually, furnaces do mention the product specifications and the energy inputs and outputs. Most of the companies ensure that they show the input BTU as opposed to listing the output BTU. This makes it look like the furnace has a better output efficiency. Furnace companies are bound to list the efficiency of the furnace and along with the input BTU, one can easily find out the actual output BTU for the given furnace. In case, a furnace does not show the listing for the output BTU, using the parameters mentioned above, one could calculate the output BTU with ease.

3) Another factor that helps with resolving what size furnace is comparison. One should compare the output BTU of the furnace along with the BTU amount that is required for the home. A 10-15 difference is often a possibility; however, a larger difference should not be ignored. A larger difference indicates that the living space would require a larger sized furnace as opposed to the one that has been compared.

4) Lastly, it is often helpful to use the knowledge of the HVAC professionals. These professionals are capable of understanding what size furnace would fit a particular area without wasting much of the energy.
