Mobile Barcodes Can Help You Honor Departed Loved Ones

By Nathan Martyn

Wouldn’t it be a comfort to visit the final resting place of a deceased loved one and have a tool available there that allowed you to use your smart phone to instantly access an online memorial in honor of your loved one, so that you can leave a short message or virtual flower? Imagine being able to take a photo of of the freshly manicured gravesite, or of the flowers you leave behind, and automatically upload it to the appropriate online memorial so that family and friends can view it virtually, wherever they are in the World.

Eterna Link is pleased to introduce self-adhesive plates which are custom laser etched with a 2D Barcode which point to the online memorial of your loved one. You simply remove the protective layer of the auto-adhesive strips and permanently attach the plate to the reverse side of the gravestone or urn. Once this 2D Barcode is affixed to the gravestone or urn, anyone with a smart phone (i.e. iPhone, Android, Blackberry) with standard QR Code reading software will be able to scan this laser etched plate and have their device automatically open the associated online memorial, making access to the memorial and your loved one’s life story, very simple and easy.

To enable your mobile phone to scan 2D barcodes generated on the plates, you will first need to install software capable of scanning and decoding. Once installed, a barcode is scanned by launching the application, focusing your phone camera at the barcode and selecting scan. If you already have such software, then you already have what you need. Note, however, that many phones do not come pre-installed with this software and so you may need to install it yourself.

Our 2D Barcode plates are durable, weather resistance and suitable for any headstone or large urn. Consider ordering one so that you can attach it to the gravesite of a dearly departed during your next visit, or send it to a family member nearer the gravesite. Let technology help you bridge the gap of time or distance to your loved one’s resting place, thus allowing everyone, wherever they may be, to come together to share fond memories and reflections that keep the memory alive until you meet again.

When visitors have scanned the barcode plate, they will be directed to a central place for friends and family to share in their grief and memories. Over time as people contribute their messages, photos and poems, it becomes a wonderful rich source of information and cherished memories for everyone. Often online memorial packages support full multi-media memorial content including video and audio.

We recommend NeoReader or QuickMark as being free and easy software for scanning 2D barcodes on your mobile device. Note, you may need to know your phone manufacturer and model to select the appropriate version when installing.

Option 1. Installing via Mobile Web Download

Go to one of the recommended product web sites below on your mobile phone’s web browser and follow the easy instructions to install the software. And you’re ready to scan!

Option 2. Installing via CAB File

If you don’t have the ability to browse the web on your phone, you can alternatively use your computer to install the software. First, you will need to download the CAB file for either “NeoReader” or “QuickMark” to your PC, then transfer it to your mobile phone.
