Breast implants continue to be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures next to nose jobs and liposuction. Many women find a renewed sense of confidence as they sport a more uplifted and full set of breasts. But did you know that breast implants should have long term care to prevent complications and to ensure that the aesthetic results will be maintained.
Silicone breast implants are made out of a more viscous material compared to its saline counterpart which is made out of a saline solution. The reason you should observe and maintain this type of implant more closely is because any leak or rupture may be quite hard to detect. Some may take years before any outward changes of the breasts can be observed, and long exposure to silicone solution can be detrimental to the body in the long run.
Due to the reports of ruptures and leakage and untoward reactions to it, the US FDA (Food and Drug Authority) stressed the importance of yearly check-ups. As mentioned earlier, silicone breast implant rupture is harder to detect because the viscosity of material provides a slower exit. Observation through the naked eye and even through palpation still will not provide accurate results with silicone. With saline implants, any leak can be immediately detected as a change in size and shape of the breast occurs.
There is a method to more properly assess the condition of silicone
implants, and this is through a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan. MRI scans were recommended by the FDA when they approved silicone implants back in the market. They specified that MRI scans be started three years after breast augmentation surgery and then every after two year of the succeeding years. The studies being conducted regarding this matter is still on going, and until results show that the failure rate for silicone implants are low, the frequency of the MRI scans may have to be lessened.
But if of any accidents or trauma particularly to the chest, a MRI scan is always necessary. This is to check if the force has not compromised the integrity of the implants.
The procedure will be done by a radiologist who is trained on how to get the right fields and to capture a good image of the implants.
Breast implants will not last a lifetime, and they are still subject to wear and tear. This is why they have to be replaced usually after ten years. Some studies claim that newer breast implants can last up to 20-25 years already, but it is still best to ask a surgeon, especially since the quality of breast implants depend on the brand of implants used. So make sure that you should also foresee the probable corrective surgery and the breast implants cost that you have to pay.
If you ever feel anything out of the ordinary especially on the chest area, immediately inform your surgeon about it. That way prompt and proper action can be given.
